STEAM Museum of the Great Western Railway (travel time 35min approx)

STEAM is housed in a beautifully restored Grade II railway building in the heart of the former Swindon railway works.
The Museum tells the story of the men and women who built, operated and travelled on the Great Western Railway - 'God's Wonderful Railway' - a railway network that, through the pioneering vision and genius of Isambard Kingdom Brunel, was regarded as the most advanced in the world.

The Talbot (walking time 10min)

The Talbot is our closest pub. If you fancy more than one Its only a short walk so you can leave the car. They have a nice beer garden and serve home cooked food on selected days including a great traditional Sunday Roast. It is situated a few hundreds yards along the A4 after you make a left turn at the end of Stockley lane.

BCH Camping (travel time 15min approx)

BCH is a friendly local store where you can get quite literally anything you need for your camping trip. If you've unpacked your tent to find the poles are missing then be relievied as not all is lost. BCH camping has a shop a mere 15 minutes away from Blackland Lakes in the town of Chippenham. They carry all the major brands related to outdoor activity and the staff are friendly and welcoming.

Wroughton Science Museum (travel time 30min approx)

On a site of breathtaking scale near Swindon we store the large and iconic objects from the National Collections of the Science Museum... and we have got 18,000 of them.
The collections span the whole spectrum of scientific and technological interest for all ages, ranging from the giant Lockheed Constellation airliner to early computers, from bicycles to the massive Wood printing press, and from MRI scanners to hovercraft.

Trowbridge Museum (travel time 30min approx)

This museum tells the story of a west country wool town, its people and its history. Housed in a former wool mill, the museum displays include working textile machinery, a weaver's cottage, a medieval castle and local history displays. There are plenty of interactive exhibits, a children's history hunt and a mouse trail. Plus regular temporary exhibitions.

Wiltshire Mircolight Center (travel time 5min approx)

Wiltshire Microlight Centre is a BMAA registered school operating from its own registered airstrip. The centre is owned and run by twice European hang gliding champion and ex-RAF pilot Tony Hughes. Tony has been a senior BMAA inspector since 1993 and undertakes Annual Permit Inspections and check flights for both flexwing and 3-axis microlights.
The flights take you over the stunning Marlborough downs with views over Ancient sites like Avebury stone Circle, Silbury Hill and the White Horses. In the summer months the flights are the best way to see the huge and complex crop circles that appear in Wiltshire.
The microlight center is located between Calne and Avebury on the A4 just outside the village of Yatesbury.

Wiltshire has many prime locations for wild swimming. There are several well known spots, some of which featured in the recent BBC 4 documentary "Wild Swimming with Alison Roberts". Stonehenge (travel time 40min approx)

One of the most famous sites in the world, 5,000 year old Stonehenge is composed of earthworks surrounding a circular setting of large standing stones. It is at the centre of the most dense complex of Neolithic and Bronze Age monuments in England.

The Black Horse (travel time 5min approx)

The Black Horse serves some of the nicest pub food in the Calne area. If your gas hob is on the blink or you just can't be bothered then nip over to Cherhill for a bite. It is also overlooked by the White horse and the Obelisk.

Bath Boating Station (travel time 40min approx)

Messing about on the river! The river Avon through the center of Bath to be exact.
Pick a nice sunny day, head down to Bath boating Station and hire one of their beautiful traditional rowing boats, skiffs or punts and you will not regret it.
This has to be one of the most glorious ways to explore a side of Bath not many people get to see. So peaceful and serene you would be forgiven for forgetting that you are in a city. Very highly recommended. Open from Easter till the end of September.

Oasis leisure centre (travel time 35min approx)

Oasis sports centre in Swindon is a great place to take the kids for a swim. Much more than just a pool, oasis has a wave machine, fast flue rides, big slides and a juniors pool with its own mini slides for mini people.

The Lysley Arms (travel time 10min approx)

Like all pubs listed on our website, the Lsyley Arms comes with highest recommendations from us personally. It is family run and all the staff are extremely friendly. The food is also fantastic and is served throughout the day. The Lysley Arms is situated on the A4 between Calne and Chippenham.

Links Center Ice Rink (travel time 35min approx)

The Link Centre houses the international-sized (26m x 56m) ice rink and provides an extensive programme including public skating, ice hockey, figuring skating, ice dance and pairs skating, as well as Learn to Skate courses, and private lessons.

Avebury Henge (travel time 15min approx)

Avebury is the largest stone circle in the world: it is 427m (1401ft) in diameter and covers an area of some 28 acres. Older and larger than Stonehenge, Avebury stone circle is another iconic and must see landmark.

White Horses (travel time 5min approx for nearest site)

There are thirteen white horses in Wiltshire. These symbolic creations are made by exposing the chalk of the limestone hills that are typical of the area. The nearest is carved into the face of Cherhill down, just a few minutes up the road from Blacklands and right next to an impressive giant stone obelisk.

Crop Circles

It is official, Aliens preffered holiday destination is Wiltshire. Wiltshire is without doubt the world centre for crop circle activity. Man made or otherwise these formations regularly appear through the summer months. At various levels of complexity and size, crop circles and their creators are always hot topics for debate in pubs and village halls around Wilshire as well as in the global press. Salisbury city, Cathedral and Old Sarum (travel time 40mins approx)

Known as 'The city in the countryside', the magnificent medieval city of Salisbury has it all: historic streets and alleyways, charming half-timbered buildings, traditional English eating houses and characterful shopping streets.

Old Sarum is a mighty Iron Age hill fort with over 5000 years history. This is also the site of the original Cathedral. Romans Normans and Saxons all left their mark here.

Kennet & Avon Canal (travel time 15min approx)

Our watery highway is now redundant from its original use but far from being abandoned it is an absolutely fantastic way of relaxing and exploring. Following gentle slopes (with one exception) and wandering through beautiful countryside, the canal still has so much to offer. From biking to boating and just good old walking you can take in the history, the engineering and the fantastic wildlife which is only interrupted by the occasional country pub.

K&A Canals main claim to fame are the Caen hill locks in Devizes. This is the longest flight of locks in Europe. The continuous flight of 29 locks raises the canal 237 feet in two miles. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caen_Hill_Locks

Bradford on Avon (travel time 30min approx)

A beautiful old town set around the river Avon, Bradford on Avon has more than its fair share of idyllic scenery. There may be more than first meets the eye too; Look closely at the town bridge and there's a small building perched upon it that was once used as a prison for trouble makers and drunks. The unfortunate imprisoned drunks probably had one too many in The Swan - possibly the wonkiest looking old pub in the world. There is also a Saxon church dating back to 700ad. Don't forget the river and canal with activities including boat and bike hire. Take a closer look at Bradford on Avon and you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Lacock (travel time 15min apporx)

The village, which dates from the 13th century and has many limewashed half-timbered and stone houses, was used as a location in the TV and film productions of Pride and Prejudice, Moll Flanders and Emma. The Abbey also featured in the recent Harry Potter films. Lacock Abbey was founded in 1232 and its original features are remarkabley well preserved. Many additions to the Abbey through the ages have only added to its beauty.

SS Great Britain (travel time 45min approx)

Completed in 1843 by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, the SS Great Britain was by far the largest vessel afloat and one of the most advanced. She was built to carry passangers across the Atlantic between Bristol and New York. Unfortunately things didn't go so smoothly for the mighty iron ship... Now she is beautifuly restored and takes pride of place in Bristol Dockyard where she is waiting to tell you her story.

Perhaps the most beautiful estate in the country is right next door to Blackland Lakes. Bowood has a stunningly beautiful stately home in the centre of the estate. Retail therapy anyone? Baths brand new shopping complex is shopping heaven. Combimed with the shops on Milsom Street, starting just above Southgate, there is nothing you won't find. Finish the day at Baths Thermae Spa, located a few minutes walking from Southgate, and you'll feel like a king/queen. For a day out in Bath we suggest catching the train from Chippenham.
